British High Commissioner To Nigeria, Catriona Laing: We Have Offered Consular Assistance To Nnamdi Kanu

While Speaking on 27th July 2021 on Kanu’s arrest, the commissioner said the embattled leader has been offered consular assistance.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria has disclosed that the Commission has offered consular assistance to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Kenya on June 27 and extradited to Nigeria on June 29. His members have accused the British government of conniving with the Federal government to arrest Kanu, an action they termed a breach of his fundamental human rights.

They argued that Kanu, who is also British citizen, is meant to be protected by the British government since he was arrested in Kenya with his UK passport and not with his Nigerian passport.

When asked to speak on his trial, Laing said;

”On Nnamdi Kanu, all I would say is that we are on record of saying that we can offer consular assistance to British nationals as requested. That is all I am prepared to say in this interview”

When pressed to speak further, Ms Laing said

”I haven’t said anything about his trial. What we have said on record is that we would do all we can and we do offer consular assistance and in this case we have offered consular assistance to Nnamdi Kanu.”
