A United States congressman, Rep. Riley M. Moore, has expressed strong confidence that terrorism and the ongoing killings of Christians in Nigeria can be brought to an end if the newly agreed security resolutions between both countries are fully executed.
Moore stated this after a closed-door meeting between a visiting US Congressional delegation and Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, where both sides discussed ways to strengthen US–Nigeria security cooperation, particularly in dismantling terrorist networks in the North-East and Middle Belt.
‘Concrete Steps Can Crush Terrorist Networks’ — Moore
According to Moore, the meeting produced “concrete steps and actions” capable of enhancing Nigeria’s national security, degrading terrorist organisations, and ending the targeted killing of Christians, especially in the Middle Belt region.
He noted that the issue of religiously motivated attacks has drawn the attention of the President of the United States, adding that it remains a personal concern for him and other US lawmakers.
US Praises Rescue of 100 Catholic Schoolchildren
Moore also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian government for the recent rescue of 100 abducted Catholic schoolchildren, describing the operation as a positive signal of Nigeria’s increasing commitment to addressing insecurity.
He said the successful mission demonstrates the government’s seriousness in implementing Tinubu’s emergency security framework.
Nigeria, US Move Toward Joint Security Framework
The congressman further revealed that both countries are getting closer to establishing a cooperative security framework, pointing to the newly formed Nigeria–US joint task force as a clear sign of deepening collaboration.
“The US sense of urgency was well received, and I believe a framework for cooperation is now within reach,” Moore said.
He added that while significant work remains, the Nigerian government has shown openness and willingness to partner with the United States on issues of terrorism, insecurity, and human rights.
Concrete Action Needed to Sustain Peace
Moore stressed that goodwill must be matched with real action on the ground to ensure lasting peace and stability in Nigeria.
He concluded by expressing hope for sustained dialogue and long-term engagement between both nations, noting that recent developments show progress in the right direction.
